Winter Adventures!

A collection of pictures from various winter adventures!

March 5, 2011: Kevin and I check out our first Iditarod start. Here, Lancy Mackey, four time winner, passes by with his team. I loved his teams hot pink booties, and the four-year-old who would yell "bootie, bootie, bootie bootie!" anytime a dog team would pass.

Downtown Anchorage...

Denali visible from the road to Glen Alps over 200 miles away.

March 12, 2011: Skiing at Hatcher Pass on a beautiful bluebird day! Once we got past the zoo that was the parking lot, we had the whole place to ourselves.

My thoughts exactly...

March 19, 2011: An absolutely incredible day skiing Arctic to Indian with Darcy and Kevin. The trail is about 18 or so miles through a beautiful valley that is inaccessible in the summer due to the lack of trail and the rather high density of bears. Our morning began with an icy descent into Arctic Valley while we watched the sun rise over the peaks.

The "trail" follows the river up most of the way. Luckily, the snow bridges across the river were still intact in most places, despite several days of pretty warm weather. We heard that folks the following week were not as lucky and spent a great deal more time bushwacking through the trees.

Up above tree line on the way up to the pass. This area is definitely on the list for further exploration this summer.

The pass and the beginning of the roughly 2000 ft descent into Indian.

The View from Our Window- Spring Edition

April 21, 2010: Well, we are in fact famous, having a picture of our backyard on the Daily Beast and all... but turns out our backyard looks nothing like that anymore! So here we are... the view from our window, spring edition. The snow has melted, the grass is just starting to think about turning green. The bike that Tomas loaned us, complete with studded tires for the icy patches on the trails, is out after frequent as we take turns riding to work. I went for a ride yesterday in just a long sleeve t-shirt because it was a balmy 44 degrees. Wonderful!

We share the view from our window with my new project... my seedlings. Aren't they cute! I am still not sure why some have not sprouted, but I have at least one healthy crop of lettuce so far that are working their way toward the sun in the window! I am told that I should not plan to put anything in the ground until late May, however, so it may be awhile before we are eating backyard salads. If anyone has any good tips on sprouting seedlings and/or cold climate gardening... send them my way!

The View from Your Window

Kevin is running victory laps around the (now melted out) backyard.

We are definitely famous now. Please leave a message with our secretaries if you would like to congratulate us on our great accomplishment.
